Holidays are coming...time to think food

So much of life revolves around food, and sharing it and enjoying it.  With the holidays around the corner, food is a focus, and we’re so glad to be hearing about it from a professional chef, seasoned businessman, educator, and entrepreneur.  He’s also a Verrado Rotary Club member who has already kicked some of our events up a notch with his delicious talent and generosity.  Chef Kevin Barko served as Director of Marketing and Promotions for Shamrock Foods in New Mexico and Arizona from 2005-2014, and then as Director of Marketing and Business Resources for the Sysco Corporation for the 6 years after.  Then in 2020, Kevin elected himself President of his own KPB Consulting firm, and we’re delighted that he and wife Amy had the vision and expertise to start Heritage Street Cooks right here in Verrado!    Kevin says:  “Heritage Street Cooks offers hands on cooking instruction for adults, teens and kids for fun and education.  Our classes are personalized for individuals, couples, and groups of all sizes and age ranges.  Kevin and Amy teach using the world standard classic French cooking technique.  Each class is scheduled one evening per week for 3 hours, and teaches solid, basic cooking skills. Students learn, create, and enjoy a new menu each week, including a dessert.  There’s more to the story: catering, meal subscriptions, the C-CAP program to prepare students for careers in culinary arts, and so much more.   Join us as we enjoy Chef Barko’s journey and story!

Last Week at Rotary

Our own member, Dr. Clay Goodman, City of Buckeye City Councilman from District 6 was our guest speaker last week.  The topic was what’s new in Buckeye.

  • The City is considering issuing a general obligation bond of around $500 million.  The bond would be issued over a period of time to be determined and would go to address immediate infrastructure needs of the city.  A 13 member Citizens Bond Committee is in the process of being formed, the be lead by our own past Mayor Jackie Meck.  The committee will review, evaluate and prioritize projects from a list developed by City staff and make recommendations to the City Council.  Possible improvements to be considered would be another fire house for Victory, a library for the Festival area, Skyline Park improvements, public safety needs and roads.
  • Clay assured us Buckeye has sufficient water resources to accommodate our expected growth.  At present 70% of Buckeye water is used for agricultural purposes. However, the city continues to seek other sources of water and will continue to be focused on this critical need for our community as it is for any desert city.
  • The City is working on a Library Master plan to help guide the City Council in the years ahead.  The plan will necessarily include considering the technological changes impacting library uses and how libraries can be help to better serve the public. Clay recommended we all explore the current offerings of the library which includes on line courses offered via Linked-in and access to statewide library offerings.
  • Clay did mention that several new restaurants are planned for the northwest corner of Roosevelt and Verrado. He also hinted that a popular grocery store could be build in the vicinity.  Stay tuned.
