Our speaker last week was our own Clay Goodman, who represents District 6 on the Buckeye City Council. There was a great deal of interest in the news Clay had to share and as usual more questions than time. Here are some key takeaways from his presentation. - Buckeye just approved is 23-24 city budget at $540 million dollars, $280 million of which is for capital projects. The budget provides for 70 public safety positions including 14 police officers and 9 firefighters
- The Sunrise Market (Near the Center on Main) has broken ground and will include a gastro pub, a Nosh and Cocktail Bar and a Bosa Doughnuts.
- The Costco will open on July 13. Roosevelt will be extended to Jackrabbit in 2024.
- The city has committed funding of $34 million to improve the Jackrabbit and Interstate 10 exchange. The city is helping to coordinate the involvement of ADOT and MCDOT as they will also be significantly involved in this project
- The extension of Prop 400 (1/2 cent sales tax to fund road and transit) continues to be bogged down in the legislature and the governor's office. The usual tug-of-war between the level and type of funding for transit versus freeways and roads is ongoing.
- The Vestar Development at the SE corner of Verrado Road and McDowell is proceeding. This project is expected to be a smaller version of the Tempe Marketplace with emphasis on an entertainment space. It currently is set to include a grocery store, a Target and a Harkins Theatre complex. Stay tuned.
- Abrazo Health and Honor Health are still committed to building West of Verrado and north and south of Interstate 10 and plans are on going.
- The city is currently evaluating a general obligation bond issue to support roads and other infrastructure. A citizens bond committee is expected to be formed later year to help determine what projects will be included in the general obligation bond offering. This will be Buckeye's first ever general obligation bond and will be focused on critical infrastructure needed as the city continues to expand rapidly.
