NEW MEETING LOCATION

Until further notice the club will be meeting at Victory Hall at the Victory Club in Verrado.  We strongly recommend you ignore your map program and use the following directions:

Take Verrado Way north to the roundabout.  Exit the first right on the roundabout onto Victory Drive and follow to its end at the stop sign. Go left onto Tiger Mountain Drive. Tiger Mountain Drive ends at the Victory Club.  Park anywhere. Victory Hall is the building on the left side of the drop off circle.  If you have any questions text Dave or Cheryl (numbers in Club Runner App). The Rotary sign will be set up at the gate to the Victory Hall.

Colonel Matthew R. Johnston

Our program last week was Colonel Matthew R. Johnston, commander of the 56th Operations Group at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, one of our favorite West Valley neighbors.  Col. Johnston explained the mission of Luke Air Force Base is to train United States and allied fighter pilots and support crews in support of the F-35, F-16 and F-15 aircraft.  The 56th Fighter Wing is the largest fighter wing in the United States Air Force.  Since 1941, Luke has trained over 61,000 pilots.  For more information about this gem in our backyard, please refer to this information sheet.

Col. Johnston described some of the advanced capabilities of the F-35, describing how the platform is designed to work in collaboration with other fighters.  He also said Luke is unique in that it is fully built out, has little open space and is surrounded by a suburban population.  Col. Johnson also mentioned that Luke is a duty station that both officers and enlisted personnel find highly desirable due to the abundance of local activities and affordable available housing.  Col. Johnston's presentation was enthusiastically received and there were many questions from members.

Pictured here is our own Margie Cossette who joined the club several weeks ago, but only this week received her name badge!  Margie a recent transplant to Arizona from New England and is the mother of Colonel Pete Cossette (USAF) who is also stationed at Luke Airforce Base.  We are glad your name badge showed up Margie and are happy to have you as a member of the Rotary Club of Verrado.

Donate to Maui Relief via Rotary Hawaii

At our meeting last week, the proceeds of Happy Bucks were devoted to Maui Relief efforts by the Rotary Clubs of Hawaii in District 5000.  If you missed the opportunity to donate last week, here are a link and a QR code that can facilitate a donation.  Thank you for your generosity. Link to District 5000 Maui Relief Fund.

Rotary Foundation Minute Blog

This blog will appear periodically with information about our Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.  This blog is about the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, not the Verrado Rotary Foundation.  If you are interested in donating to the Rotary Foundation on a one time or recurring basis or as part of your estate plan, please contact Mike Hosking.

The Paul Harris Fellowship was established in 1947, in memory of the Founder of Rotary, Paul Harris.  Each member of Rotary is encouraged to consider becoming a Paul Harris Fellow.  You are recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow when your cumulative giving to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International totals $1,000.  Most members continue to make contributions after achieving this milestone and are then recognized as multiple Paul Harris Fellows for each additional $1,000 donated to the Foundation.  For your second and subsequent Paul Harris fellowships you can name another individual as a Paul Harris fellow if you wish.

Most members find it convenient to make periodic contributions via the Rotary Direct program. With Rotary Direct you can establish monthly, quarterly or annual contributions to the Foundation's annual fund.  All donations to the Foundation are voluntary, but the club encourages each member to consider an annual contribution of $100 or more.
August 15, 2023
Today we presented a Paul Harris Fellowship pin with five sapphires, to Dr. David Faragher, a charter member of our club and past president.  The Five Sapphire pin represents the achievement of funding 6 Paul Harris Fellowships, each of which involves donating $1,000 to the Foundation.  Dave has joined the Paul Harris Society which is the topic of this post.

The Paul Harris Society recognizes Rotary members and friends of The Rotary Foundation who elect to contribute $1,000 or more each year to the Annual Fund, PolioPlus Fund, or approved global grants and advises the Foundation of their intention to continue to do so.  Paul Harris Society Members are recognized with a chevron to wear with the Rotary pin and with a certificate.
