Last Week The special speaker at our last Rotary meeting was our own Kevin Barko. After several years working in the corporate world, the onset of covid gave Kevin the opportunity to revisit his career choice. With the blessing of his wife Amy, Kevin decided to start up his own business, Heritage Steet Cooks, in 2020. Coincidentally, on the first day of starting his new business, Kevin was invited to join our Rotary Club. What a great match it has been, since Kevin has built his business on the wholesome principles of life, service and fun, the same cornerstones of Verrado Rotary. Kevin has mainly focused on training students in the culinary arts and helping them obtain scholarships by partnering with high schools to offer classes and hold cooking competitions for the students. The students also gain cooking experience by participating in booths at events such as Nascar, “Taste of the NFL” and “Gathering Buckeye”. The culmination of the competitions and awarding of scholarships is held at the Harvest Moon Breakfast each year where over $500,000 in scholarships is awarded. Kevin is also the Head Chef for “Meals of Joy” where, according to Larry Cervarich, he has done an outstanding job at helping provide over 40,000 fresh, healthy meals to grateful Seniors and Veterans. A huge thank you to Brian Detwiler (Oct 1) and Robin Polk (Oct 8) for editing our "Last Week" section while your editor was away playing. |
